PLN signs contracts worth Rp 2.31 trillion

State electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) has signed seven contracts worth Rp 2.31 trillion (1 US$= Rp 9,300) to build coal-fired power plants outside Java, Bisnis Indonesia Daily reported on Friday.

The company?s President Director Fahmi Mochtar said in Jakarta on Thursday that the power plants were expected to start operating as from the second quarter of 2010.

According to Fahmi, the power plants will be constructed by several consortiums which include Chinese companies Shandong Machinery I & E Group Corp and Guangdong Machinery Imp & Exp Co Ltd.

The seven power plants were part of the coal-fired power plant projects to be built under the government's 10,000 MW crash program.

PLN plans to build a total of 11 power plants outside Java as part of the crash program. By signing the seven constracts on Thursday, PLN has signed all the contracts to build the 11 power plants. However, none of the projects have shown progress in construction. In the system outside Java, capacity of power plants which should be built in the crash program is 1,940 MW or 25 percent of the total capacity of 10.000 MW. (*)
