State owned electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) signed on Friday an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract with the consortium of Sinohydro Corporation Limited and PT Pembangunan Perumahan Tbk for the PLTA Jatigede hydropower plant project in West Java.

The EPC conract was signed by PLN?s President Director Nur Pamudji and Sinohydro?s Managing Director for Asia-Pacific Deng Xi, PLN said in a statement on Friday.

The power plant designed with a capacity of 2x55 MW will be built in Cijeunjing village, Jatigede district, Sumedang regency. Water for the power plant will be sourced from the Jatigede dam which is under construction by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing. Aside from generating power, the dam will irrigate 90 hectares of land and also function as flood control for the northern coastal area of Java, particularly Cirebon city and Indramayu regency.

Works on the PLTA Jatigede project include the development of power house, waterways, surg tank, penstock trailrace, transformer yard and switch yard, transmission line and other supporting facilities. Power from the power plant will be transmitted to the 150 kV Java-Bali grid system.

The project is scheduled to be completed 48 months after financial closing, according to Pamudji.

?If the develoment of the project is kicked off in eary in 2015, and all things happen according to plans, PLTA Jatigede will start supplying power to the Java-Bali grid in early 2019. However, I hope the project can be completed earlier than schedule,? Pamudji said.
