State-owned electricity firm PT PLN signed on Tuesday MoUs with independent power producers (IPPs) for the development of two biomass-based power plant projects in Kalimantan.

PLN said in a statement that the first MoU was signed with PT Pusaka Jaya International for a 2x5 MW biomass power plant project, which will supply electricity in Sekadau and Putussibau, West Kalimantan Province.

The second MoU was signed with PT Pusaka Penajam Energi, which will develop a 2x5 MW biomass power plant in Penajam Paser Utara, East Kalimantan Province.

No further details were provided for the two planned projects.

PLN Director of Business for Kalimantan Region, Machnizon Masri said in the statement that the renewable power plant projects forms part of efforts to increase electrification ratio in remote areas.

Machnizon said that in line with the company?s electricity procurement business plan (or RUPTL), the Kalimantan region electricity system is projected to have additional power supply of 3,191 MW. With peak load in 2020 projected to reach 2,107 MW, there will be electricity reserves of more than 1,084 MW, enough to supply demand from industries in the region.

Elsewhere, PLN also signed MoUs on power supply with 15 industrial customers in Kalimantan with total planned installed capacity of 154 MVA.

The combined installed power capacity in the Khatulistiwa System of West Kalimantan, Barito System in South Kalimantan, and Mahakam System in East Kalimantan currently stands at 1,646 MW, while peak load stands at 1,215 MW, creating a surplus of 430 MW, and thus providing room for PLN to increase power supply to industries in the region, PLN said in the statement.
