The MOUs were signed by PLN President Director Nur Pamudji, KIM President Director Gandhi D. Tambunan, PT Timah President Director Sukrisno, PT Earthstone Director Hemankur Upadhaya and Bantaeng Regent Nurdin Abdullah in a signing ceremony at PLN headquarters in Jakarta on Friday.
Based on the agreements, PLN will provide power supply of 200 megawatt (MW) to PT KIM in the industrial estate in Medan, North Sumatra, 25 MW to PT Timah for its operations in Bangka regency of Bangka Belitung province, 70 MW for PT Earthstone Metals And Mining and Bantaeng regency for its plant in Bantaeng regency, South Sulawesi.
Gandhi said that with only a total power supply of 90 MW provided by PLN right now, KIM had found it hard to meet the power need of investors in the industrial area. ?Investors have always sought for a guarantee of power supply. That?s why we need an additional power of 200 MW from PLN to meet the need of investors,? he said.
In Bangka regency, the power supply of 25 MW from PLN will be used to support PT Timah?s plan to expand business.
In line with the plan, PLN is also in the process of strengthening its power grid in Bangka Belitung province by linking to the power grid in South Sumatra through a 150KV subsea cable.
Currently, in Bangka regency, PT Timah has to rely on oil fuel-based power plants to fulfill its power need. ?We need to cut the cost of using the expensive oil fuels,? said Sukrisno.
At the same occasion, Nur Pamudji said that PLN is developing a coal-fired power plant (PLTU) in Bangka with a generation capacity of 2x30 MW. ?So far, there has been no problem with the coal supply from South Sumatera. Its unit 1 has been completed and is now under commissioning that will be finalized in March. The other 2 units will be completed in 2014,? he said.
In addition, a private company will also build a PLTU power plant with a generation capacity of 2x30 MW. "So, there will be an additional generation capacity of 4x30 MW for Bangka,? he said.
The power agreement with PT Earthstone Metals And Mining is related with its plan to develop a manganese processing plant in Bantaeng regency that will need a power supply of 70 MW. This is the second agreement signed by Bantaeng regent after he ? together with president director of the smelter firm PT Bumi Bakti Sulawesi - signed a similar agreement with PLN last year.
