PLN signs PPA on PLTP Sarulla

State utility PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), and a consortium of Medco-Ormat-Itochu-Kyushu signed the second amendment of power purchase agreement (PPA) for the geothermal power plant (PLTP) Sarulla in Sarulla, North Sumatra.

The PPA was signed by PLN President Director Nur Pamudji, PGE President Muhammad Husen, Medco Geopower Sarulla President Director Noor Wahyu Hidayat, Orsarulla Inc. (Ormat) Director Ammon Gabbay, Sarulla Power Asset Ltd. (Itochu) Director Takae Shinohara, Kyuden Sarulla PTE. Ltd. (Kyushu) Director Takashi Tajiri, and Sarulla Operations Ltd. (Sol) Director Takao Shinohara at the PLN headquarters in Jakarta on Thursday.

Based on the PPA, PLN will buy power produced by the Sarulla geothermal power plant at the average price of 6,79 US cents per kWh.

PLTP Sarulla with a generation capacity of 330 megawatt (MW) is located in the geothermal working area (WKP) Sarulla owned by PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) in North Tapanuli regency and South Tapanuli regency of North Sumatra province.

PT PGE has appointed a consortiom of Medco-Ormat-Itochu-Kyushu as its contractor that will construct and operate the geothermal power plant (PLTP).

The geothermal power plants will be built in two locations, namely in Silangkitang (220 MW) and Namora (110 MW). It will also build a 150 kV transmission with a length of about 15 kilometer from the two locations to the interconnection system owned by PLN in the area.

The development of the Sarulla geothermal power plant will be realized in three stages. The first stage will be in operation in 2016, the second stage in 2017, and the third stage in 2018.

Nur Pamudji said that the project had been prepared since 1993 and hopefully it will start operation in 2016.
