Public utility PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) started on Monday supplying power round the clock to Ngenang Island, a resort island located between Batam and Bintan islands in Riau Archipelago province.
PLN transmits 8.5 MW of power to the small island through the Batam-Bintan underwater150 kV transmission line, the firm said in a statement obtained on Wednesday.
PLN?s spokesman Agung Murdifi said the transmission of power to the island was made possible thanks to the completion of 13 towers linking Tanjung Sauh Island to Ngenang Island and a substation in Ngenang.
There are 200 families living on the island at present. The island is well known for its beautiful beach and a proposal has been submitted to the government to give the island a Free Trade Zone (FTZ) status.
