State-owned electricity firm PT PLN confirmed it had suspended on November 2 the operation of the 4x65 MW PLTU Bukit Asam coal-fired power plant in South Sumatra.

Kontan quoted PLN Spokesman I Made Suprateka as saying Friday that the move was made following the operation of the 2x150 MW PLTU Sumsel V coal-fired power plant owned by PT DSSP Power Sumsel, a subsidiary of IDX-listed PT Dian Swastatika Sentosa Tbk.

He said that PLN is required to purchase power from the PLTU Sumsel V plant under a power purchase agreement signed with DSSP.

Suprateka said PLN will resume operation of the PLTU Bukit Asam once power demand in South Sumatra picks up, or new transmission facilities have been built in Sumatra to allow Bukit Asam plant to export electricity to North Sumatra.

Kontan said that the PLN labor union has protested the suspension of PLTU Bukit Asam.(*)
