The paper quoted PLN President Director Sofyan Basir as saying that the move would ensure the project can be developed on schedule as the company will take care by itself the funding requirement as well as the coal supply.
A lengthy tender process finally ended up with two consortia competing for the project including a consortium comprising of China Oceanwide Shanghai Electric and PT Pembangkitan Jawa Bali, and consortium of PT Sumber Segara Prima Jaya, CNEC, and PT Wijaya Karya Tbk.
PLN, however, recently suspended the tender process, saying at the time there was suspicion of irregularities in the tender.
The PLTU Jawa-5 project is part of the government?s plan to develop a combined 35,000 MW power plants until 2019. The project is also seen as part of the 25,000 MW to be given to the private sector.
Agung Wicaksono, Head of the National Electricity Development Program Committee, declined to provide much comment as he has yet to receive the official report, but said that under the 35,0000 MW program, PLN has been assigned to develop around 10,000 MW.
He said that additional capacity to be developed by PLN should only come from peaker power plant projects or those located in remote areas. The PLTU Jawa-5 project does not fall in this criteria. (*)
