State electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) will lease coal-fired power plants from independent power producers (IPPs) to cope with the sharp increase in the demand outside Java.

Under this cooperation scheme, investors would only need to provide a power generator and then to become its operator, PLN said in a statement. PLN will in return provide the land for the power plant, power grids as well as the preparation for its operation. PLN will also be responsible for the supply of the coal for the power plant and purchase the electricity.

PLN said that with such cooperation scheme, it hoped it would be able to reduce the use of diesel power plants in order to reduce operating costs.

PLN will lease from IPPs under 9 years contract and the each project is expected to be completed within 20 months.

A number of coal-fired power plants which are currently being tendered under the lease scheme, include:
1. PLTU Tarahan, Lampung, 2 x (120-150) MW
2. PLTU NTB, West Nusa Tenggara 4 x (25-30) MW
3. PLTU Timika, Papua 2 x 15 MW
4. PLTU Riau, Riau 2 x (120-150) MW

6. PLTU Teluk Balikpapan, East Kalimantan 2 x (120-150) MW
7. PLTU Asam-Asam, South Kalimantan 3 x (50-65) MW
