PLN to acquire private power producers

Saturday, July 27 2002 - 03:40 AM WIB

State electricity company PLN has planned to acquire a number of independent power producers so as to increase electricity supply for Java and Bali, PLN president director Eddie Widiono said on Friday.

PLN will cooperate with state oil and gas company Pertamina in materializing its plan, and that acquisition will be made through PT Geo Dwipa, Eddie told reporters as reported by Bisnis Indonesia daily. PLN and Pertamina jointly own Geo Dwipa, respectively 37 percent and 63 percent.

?If our planned becomes reality, there will be more electricity supply for Java and Bali,? Eddie said.

Eddie did not mention the names of the power producers to be bought by PLN. He only said their projects had been suspended in 1998 after Indonesia was hit by severe economic crisis.

The government in 1998 suspended 27 power projects owned by independent power producers. (*)
