PLN to appoint Paiton Energy as developer of new power plant

State-owned electricity firm PT PLN is set to appoint PT Paiton Energy Company (PEC) as the developer of the 800 MW Paiton 3-4 coal fired power plant because its competitor, PT Jawa Power, has failed to submit bidding document by the deadline.

“We are set to appoint PEC as the developer of the power plant because PT Jawa Power has not yet submitted its proposal,” said Ali Herman Ibrahim, PLN’s primary energy director said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

PT Jawa Power has been given about three months to submit its proposal. “They (PT Jawa Power) could have submitted its proposal in two weeks, if they had wanted to,” he went on.

Herman said despite the direct appointment, PLN would negotiate with PEC on the price of power from the new plant and PLN would fight to get a lowest-possible price.

PLN has invited Jawa Power and PEC in beauty contest to find a developer for the new power plant. Both Jawa Power and PEC currently operate 1,220-MW and 1,320-MW power plants, respectively, in Paiton power complex in Situbondo, East Java . (godang)
