PLN to begin geothermal power project in 2005

State owned electricity company PLN is set to begin the construction of two geothermal power plants Ulu Belu in Lampung and Lumut Balai in South Sumatra, respectively in 2005 and 2006, Suara Karya reported on Tuesday.

"The auction of the two projects will be launched next year," PLN's director of premier energy and power plants Ali Herman said, adding that PLN was still negotiating with Japan Bank for International Corporation to finance the projects.

According to him, the two projects had been included in the list of loans that would be approved by the bank.

The two geothermal power plant which will have a capacity of 2 x 55 MW respectively, would each cost about US$110 million to build. (*)
