State power firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) plans to spend Rp 1.5 trillion (US$167.93 million) to install a 1,100-kilometer underground power grid in Greater Jakarta, The Jakarta Post reported on Tuesday.

The new cable would be used to replace old and overburdened cable in Jakarta, the newspaper quoted PLN Greater Jakarta general manager Purnomo Willy as saying on Monday.

?We began installing the new cable in early 2010. Now we need to install the remaining 500 kilometers,? Willy said, adding that new cable would be installed in several areas in Jakarta and Tangerang.

Willy said that PLN would need around Rp 1.5 trillion for installing the new underground cable, which would be entirely financed from PLN?s internal sources.

By 2016 PLN plans to construct at least 11 major transmission systems throughout Indonesia. PLN plans to build two 270 kilovolt (kV) transmission systems in Sumatra. The first system will connect southern Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, and the northern regions of Sumatra. The system is expected to be operational by 2013.

The second system will connect the coal-fired power plant in Meulaboh, West Aceh, to Lhokseumawe, also in Aceh. This transmission system is expected to be on stream by 2016.

In Java, PLN plans to construct a 500 kV transmission system connecting Tanjung Jati, Ungaran, Pemalang - all in Central Java - with Mandirancan, Indramayu, and Cibatu in West Java. The company expects the system to be operational by 2015.

In Kalimantan PLN plans to construct three 150 kV power transmissions. The first network will connect South and Central Kalimantan with East Kalimantan. The system is expected to start operations by 2012. The second network will be located inside West Kalimantan, while the third will connect West Kalimantan with South and Central Kalimantan. Both systems are expected to begin commercial operations in 2016.

PLN also plans to construct a 150 kV power transmission in Sulawesi. The transmission is also expected to be on stream by 2016. Apart from the inland transmission projects, PLN is also preparing two inter-island power connections and two international power transmissions.

The company is preparing the 500 kV transmission connecting Java and Bali, and the 500 kV transmission connecting Sumatra and Java. The transmissions are expected to start operations by 2015 and 2016 respectively.

Internationally, PLN is preparing two transmissions connecting Indonesia and the Malaysian power system. The first project is the 275 kV transmission connecting Indonesia?s West Kalimantan and Malaysia?s Sarawak. The transmission is expected to be on stream by 2012. The second transmission is a 250 kV transmission to connect Sumatra and peninsular Malaysia, and is expected to begin operating by 2015.

The cross-border power transmission lines are covered by an ASEAN agreement In 1997 ASEAN countries agreed to cooperate in developing 11 cross-border transmission points to facilitate power exchanges during peak periods. (*)
