State owned electricity company Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) plans to build a coal-fired power plant with capacity of 4,000 megawatt in Karawang, West Java to meet the surge in demand in power supply from industrial users in Java, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Monday.

PLN?s general manager for distribution in West Java and Bali, Denny Pranoto said last week that the state electricity company would need land area of at least 400 hectares for the location of the power plant.

According to him, the location of the power plant should be near sea so that it will be easy for the company to receive coal shipment for the power plant.

PLN would invite investors to jointly build the Karawang power plant which would become the largest power plant in the country. ?The construction cost is about $1.5 million per MW. So, for the KarawanG power plant, the cost will be 4,000 times the $1.5 million,? he added.

For the construction of the power plant, PLN would cooperate with the local government especially in finding the location for the project, Denny said. (*)
