State electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) plans to build a coal-fired power plant on Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara, at a cost of US$54.34 million, The Jakarta Post newspaper reported on Saturday quoting Antara news agency.

The power plant, which would be built in Lembar district, West Lombok regency, would have a maximum capacity of 2x25 megawatts (MW), said Mustiko Bawono , the general manager of PLN's West Nusa Tenggara operations.

Mustiko said of the $54.34 million needed to build the plant, some $16.79 would come from PLN and the rest would be obtained through bank loans.

The company chose Lombok as the site of the proposed plant because the island is rich in coal reserves. The island has 159.7 million tons of known coal reserves.
