State-owned electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) has cut down the number of power plants to be built in the Second Phase 10,000 MW power development program to 78 units from 99 units as initially planned, Kompas reported Wednesday.

PLN?s President Director Fahmi Mochtar said in Jakarta on Tuesday that the electricity company had finalized the details of the power plants to be built under the Second Phase 10,000 MW power development progarm, which would be carried out in five years until 2014.

?The details of the new power projects will be soon submitted to the government,? he said.

He said that the 78 power plants to be built in Java and outside Java were expected to provide additional power supplies of 9,706 megawatt (MW). About 60 percent of the new projects will consist of geothermal and hydro power plants with the other 40 percent comprising coal-fired and combined cycle power plants.

The entire projects will require investments of up to US$15.32 billion.

Investors or independent power producers (IPPs) will be involved to take part in the construction of the new plants as PLN will have not enough funding to handle all the projects.

PLN?s Director for Planning Bambang Praptono said that the government had promised to offer a number of incentives including the issuance of a guarantee letter to lure IPPs to take part in the program.

In the Second Phase 10,000 MW power development program, PLN would only handle large-scale power projects such PLTA Cisokan hydropower plant in West Java, PLTA Asahan 3 hydropower plant in North Sumatra, the expansion of PLTGU Muara Karang combined cycle power plant in Bekasi, PLTU Parit Baru coal-fired power plant in West Kalimantan, and PLTU Indramayu Baru coal-fired power plant in West Java, he said.

At present PLN is completing the construction of 35 coal-fired power plants in Java and outside Java under the First Phase 10,000 MW power development program, also called the fast-track power development program. (*)
