State utility PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) said that its subsidiary PT Pembangkitan Jawa ? Bali (PJB) will develop a compressed natural gas (CNG) storage in its power plant Muara Tawar and Gresik as a way to reduce the use of oil fuels (BBM) during peak load and to optimize the use of gas for power plants.

The company said in a press statement on Monday that the groundbreaking of the storage construction was conducted on Monday and it is expected that on 6th November 2013 the CNG Storage can undergo a trial operation at capacity of 5 MMSCF. Later on 11th December 2013, it is expected to start full operation with a total capacity of 20 MMSCF.

The CNG Storage in Muara Tawar, which is constructed by the consortium of PT Pembangunan Perumahan (PP), Odira, and Adcomp, will be supplied with gas from state gas distributor PT PGN through the South Sumatra West Java II (SSWJ II) pipeline and gas from PT Pertamina EP that is not absorbed during base load due to the system of Java-Bali grid. Total supply from both PGN and Pertamina EP will average at 180 BBTUD.

During peak load, the stored gas at the storage will be used to replace the BBM. With the CNG storage, which needs a total investment of Rp 508 billion, will save the use of high speed diesel (HSD) at 203,000 kiloliter or Rp 1.786 trillion per year (assuming HSD price at Rp 8,800 per liter).

After deducting the cost of buying gas and compressors, then net saving from the use of the CNG will stand at Rp 1.187 trillion per year. The CNG use will also reduce carbon emission at 350 tons per year.

The CNG storage in Muara Tawar with a capacity of 20 MMSCF will increase power generation during peak load by 400 Megawatt (MW) during nine hours with fixed supply of gas at 180 BBTUD. In the future, the capacity of the CNG storage will be increased up to 72 MMSCF.
