PLN to build coal-fired power plant in Biak

State-owned electricity firm PT PLN plans to build a coal-fired power plant in Biak Regency, Papua, to help meet electricity demand in 2020 when the province is scheduled to host the PON national sports event.
General Manager of PLN?s Papua and West Papua regional office, Robert Sitorus was quoted by Antara as saying Wednesday that the power plant will have an initial capacity of 50 MW. He, however, has yet to obtain information from the provincial administration on the required electricity supply for the PON sport event.
He did not provide further details about the power plant project.
Head of the Papua mining and energy office Bangun Manurung said that the electricity supply requirement for the PON sport event is estimated to reach 60 MW. (*)
