The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has finally allowed state-owned electricity firm PT PLN to build diesel-fired power plants in 47 border and remote areas across the country, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Tuesday.
The paper quoted Director General of Electricity Jarman as saying that the diesel-fired power plants, each with capacity of 60 MW, are seen as a quick solution to provide power for people in the border and remote areas.
He expected construction to start soon and be completed in 2015. He added that the project is the first stage, to be expanded to include other types of fuel.
PLN in recent years has started efforts to reduce the role of diesel-fired power plants as the type of fuel is more expensive compared to others. (*)
