State owned electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) will build gas-fired power plants with a combined capacity reaching 8.7 gigawatts (GW) or 8,700 MW by 2022, according to an official of the firm.
PLN?s Head of Gas and Fuel Division Suryadi Mardjoeki in a seminar titled Gas Pipeline in Jakarta on Wednesday said this plan is in line with the government's commitment to reduce the use of diesel for power generation.
"The capacity consists of gas-turbine power plants (PLTG) with a total capacity of 3.7 GW and combined cycle power plants (PLTGU) with a total capacity of 5 GW," he said.
Suryadi revealed that the plan is included in the company?s Electric Power Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) until 2022, Suryadi said, adding the construction of gas-fired power plants require supporting infrastructures such as transmission and distribution pipelines.
He further explained that the development of the gas-fired power plants will be focused on areas that still use oil fuel for power generation.
"For example, the North Sumatra province still uses a large amount of oil fuel. Use of oil fuel can reach 3.2 million kilo liters per year there. Once the Arun-Belawan gas pipeline project has been completed, oil fuel consumption can be reduced up to 75%," he said.
