State-owned mining firm PT Aneka Tambang (Antam) signed Friday an agreement with state electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) to build 260-MW coal-fired power plant in Antam?s FeNi IV smelting project in Halmahera.

PLN will finance, build and operate the power plant, in which the electricity will only be supplied to Antam?s FeNi IV smelter.

The smelter is expected to produce around 27,000 tons of nickel in ferronickel with completion of the project scheduled for end of 2013.

The constuction of the smelter project is expected to be started in November this year, Antam's president director Alwinsyah Loebis told reporter in Jakarta.

The total investment required for the smelter project was about US$1.6 billion, he said. (giok)
