The regional office of the state owned electricity company PT Perusahaan Negara Listrik (PLN) for South Sumatera plans to buy electricity supply from state owned companies Pertamina and Pusri to cope with the acute shortage of power supply in the area.

Enny Sri Murdjiani, the spokesman for the electricity company, said in Palembang on Thursday that the company expected to be able to buy a total of 40 MW of power supply from the two state owned companies beginning next year.

"Negotiations on the purchase is underway and we hope the talks could be concluded soon," she told Sriwijaya Post.

Enny said that she hoped that PLN would be able to allocate about 20 MW and Pertamina another 20 MW to help cope with the acute shortage in the electricity supply in the company's regional networks, which covers provinces of Jambi, South Sumatera, Bangkulu, and Lampung.

PLN is planning to build several hydro power plants in Lampung, Bengkulu and Lubuk Linggau to solve the power shortage. The planned power plants, however, will be able to operate only after 2005. (*)
