State utility company plans to develop 1,000 solar power plants (PLTS) in remote islands across Indonesia over the next three years beginning in 2012, President Director of PLN, Dahlan Iskan, said.

?The 1,000 solar power plants will be built on 1,000 small islands,? said Dahlan.

PLN has formed a special team to realize the ambitious plan. Once those solar powers are operating, Indonesia could be categorized as the user of renewable energy in the world, said Dahlan.

Earlier, Nasri Sebayang, PLN?s director for planning and technology, said the company will construct as many as 115 solar power plants across the country beginning from fourth quarter this year and expects those plants to begin commercial operations in the first quarter of 2012. (romel)
