State-owned electricity firm PT PLN would discontinue the operation of aging 450-MW power plants in Sumatra in 2009 - 2010 when the region would obtain additional capacity as much as 1,500 MW, Investor Daily reported on Friday.

The power plants located in Northern Sumatra (250 MW) and Southern Sumatra (200 MW) include combined cycle power plant(PLTGU) Keramasan, PLTGU Tarahan, diesel power plant (PLTD) Palembang and PLTGU Bukit Asam, said Herman Darnel Ibrahim, PLN?s transmission and distribution director in Jakarta on Friday.

PLN has to halt the operation of the power plants because the operational cost is high, he said, adding that the generating capacity in the region would increase following the completion of the crash program to build 10,000 MW coal fired power plants. The region would also be supported by the completion of 1,200 km, 257 KV transmission network. (*)
