State electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) will launch the tender for the construction of new power plants to be built under the Phase Two 10,000 megawatt-power plant development plan at the end of this year.

?We are now preparing for the launch of the tender,? PLN's director for risk management Murtaqi Syamsuddin said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

In the Phase Two 10,000 MW program, PLN expects to add 10,153 MW to the country's power generation capacity to cope with the power shortage in Java and outside Java.

A half of the new capacity will be accounted for by independent power producers (IPPs), while PLN will accounts for the rest.

PLN will build 21 new power plants, including 11 geothermal power plants, two hydropower plants, six coal-fired power plants and one gas-fired power plant.

Meanwhile the IPPs will build 72 new power plants, including 33 geothermal power plants, one hydro power plant, 36 coal-fired power plants, and two gas-fired power plants.

According to the existing schedule, the new power plants will come into production in 2013-2014. (godang)
