The state-owned electricity company PLN plans to rent out the geothermal power generation unit managed by oil and gas firm Unocal to a third party in a bid to lessen its financial burden, according to a source at PLN.

The source as said that an American company had agreed to rent the power-generating unit, but the government had not yet given its approval.

"PLN can no longer purchase the power sold by Unocal at 4 U.S. cent per Kwh," the source told Petromindo.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro confirmed the plans, but declined to provide details arguing that the PLN proposal was still be evaluated. (R. Amoros)
