State-owned electricity firm PT PLN expects construction of a planned 30 MW gas engine power plant in Ambon, Maluku, to start soon in the hope that it could be completed next year.

PLN Business Director for Maluku and Papua Region, Haryanto WS said that tender process to select the ECP contractor for the project is currently in progress.

?The procurement process is currently in progress. The plan is to sign the contract in March or April,? he told Petromindo.com on Monday.

He said that once the contract with the ECP contractor has been signed, construction process is expected to immediately start. He added that the peaker power plant is targeted to be completed within 12 months.

Haryanto said that gas requirement for the power plant will come from the Tangguh LNG project in West Papua at a volume of about 15 mmscfd. ?The (gas supply) contract is for 20 years, but we could not yet determine the value,? he said

Haryanto said that peak load in Ambon currently stands at 58 MW, while total installed capacity is 68 MW.

He said that with the upcoming operation of a 60 MW marine vessel power plant (MVPP) in Ambon in April, and the operation of the 30 MW gas engine power plant next year, Ambon will have electricity reserves margin of close to 100 percent.
