PLN to start coal mine acquisition this year

State-owned electricity firm PT PLN said it has obtained approval from Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Ignasius Jonan over its plan to start acquisition of coal mines this year, Kontan reported on Monday.
The paper quoted PLN President Director Sofyan Basir as saying that the coal mine acquisition forms part of efforts to better ensure coal supply for its power plants at reasonable price.
?He (Jonan) has approved (the coal mine acquisition plan). We?ll later see one by one which (mine) location is the best. This year, we must already have (coal mine),? Sofyan said.
About 60 percent of PLN?s power plants are fueled by coal. PLN?s coal consumption this year is estimated at 86 million tons. It will increase by another 70 million tons in 2020 as new coal-fired power plants come on stream. (*)
