State-owned electricity firm PT PLN has signed a MoU with cement manufacturer PT Semen Kupang III to supply up to 30 MW of electricity for a new cement plant to be developed by the latter company in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara Province.

Richard Safkaur, General Manager of PLN?s East Nusa Tenggara office, was quoted by Antaranews as saying Friday that Semen Kupang through subsidiary PT Semen Indonesia Kupang is preparing to soon start construction of a new cement plant, which requires higher power capacity than its existing cement plant in Kupang.

He said that PLN currently supplies 9 MW of power capacity for the existing Semen Kupang plant, of which only 7 MW has been utilized.

Richard said that power supply in the Kupang system is more than sufficient to supply electricity including for new investment such as the planned new cement plant with recent operation of a 60 MW marine vessel power plant, and upcoming supply from the 2x16.5 MW Bolok coal-fired power plant, which is expected to start commercial operation in March 2017.

The extra power capacity from the two power plants will make Kupang to enjoy electricity surplus of more than 90 MW, he said. (*)
