PLN, Transgasindo sign GTA to flow gas to Duri

State utility PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) and PT Transgasindo signed a gas transportation agreement (GTA) to flow gas from the joint operation body (JOB) Jambi Merang in Jambi to its power plant in Duri, Riau.

The GTA was signed by PLN President Director Nur Pamudji, and Transgasindo President Director Arsyad Rangkuti, as well as by Transgasindo Business Development Director Arief Transaindra Kushermawan in a ceremony held at PLN headquarters in Jakarta on Friday.

Based on the GTA, Transgasindo will funnel gas at a volume of 35 MMSCFD through a 250 kilometer pipeline from JOB Jambi Jambi Merang to Duri power plant in Riau.

Nur Pamudji said that the agreement was part of PLN plan to cut the consumption of diesel fuel (BBM) in northern Sumatra by maximizing the use of gas available in the area. ?We?ll maximize the use of gas in northern Sumatra so that our diesel fuel consumption can be cut,? he said during the signing ceremony.

He admitted that the gas supply is mostly available in southern Sumatra, while northern has seen a rising demand for electricity, requiring more gas supply to generate power plants there.

?In Medan we?ve seen that power demand has been increasing significantly, but we cannot yet fully fulfill the demand. We plan to build gas power plants near to Medan, like the one we?ve built in Duri. The power generated from the power plants then will be transmitted through a transmission to Medan,? he added.

He noted that PLN will also build a storage of gas in the form of compression natural gas (CNG) in Duri. The CNG will be later used to increase the generation capacity of the power plant, just like what had been done by PLN in Palembang.

Palembang, he said, only has a gas supply at 3 MMSCFD, which is only able to generate power at 12 megawatt (MW). But PLN had developed a CNG storage, enabling the power plant to generate up to 50 MW during peak load.

PLN Gas and Diesel Fuel Division Head Suryadi Mardjoeki said that the gas supply at 35 MMSCFD from Transgasindo will be used to generate power at 20 MW.

?In the future, PLN will develop micro gas-fired power plants (PLTMG) with a capacity of 110 MW. Besides that, we?ll also build a CNG storage to utilize the gas supply at 4 MMSCFD in Duri. With the CNG storage, we can annihilate the use of diesel fuel during peak load,? said Suryadi.

Arsyad Rangkut said that besides to Duri, PLN can also utilize its gas pipeline to funnel gas to regions other than Duri. Previously, Transgasindo has managed to funnel gas to the power plant in Payo Selincah at a volume of 25 MMSCFD and the power plant in Rengat at 4 MMSCFD.
