PLN, Waskita Karya to build transmission line in Sumatra

State-owned electricity company PT Perusaaan Listrik Negara (PLN) signed on Friday a contract with state-owned engineering and construction firm PT Waskita Karya to build a 500 kV, 395 km transmission line on Sumatra Island.
PLN said in a statement that the project will be divided into two phases. The first 235 km phase will link New Aur Duri in Jambi and Peranap in Riau. The Rp 3.88 trillion project is expected to be completed in three years.
The second 160 km phase will link Peranap and Perawang, also in Riau. The Rp 2.83 trillion project is also expected to be completed in three years.
The 500 kV Sumatra transmission line in the future will be prepared as extension of the Java-Sumatra interconnection, linked via an undersea 500 kV cable, which currently still at procurement stage. The Sumatra transmission network is also expected to facility electricity transfer from and to Malaysia.
