State-owned electricity company PT PLN last month signed an MoU with PT Waymon Energi for cooperation to develop a 3 MW gas-fired power plant in Tenimabuan, South Sorong Regency, West Papua Province.
PLN said in a statement last week that the planned power plant would be fueled by compressed natural gas, taking advantage of the gas potential in Sorong.
The company said that prior to making the proposed power plant project, Waymon had conducted a six-month survey including on the gas potential in Sorong.
While no further details about the planned project was provided, PLN said that going forward the two companies plan to cooperate in the development of similar gas-fired power plants in other areas particularly to replace existing diesel-fired plants such as in Fakfak and Manokwari.
