Indonesia's state owned enterprise company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) will consume more than 100 million tons of per year after 2017 for its Coal Fired Power Plant (CFPP).

Helmi Najamudin, Head Division of Coal at PLN said that for the next 10 years, the electricity supply in Indonesia is still relying on CFPP including Mine Mouth Power Plant.

"It is because the availability of coal is abundant as primary energy and cost of production is relatively cheaper compared to other type of power generation, but still taking into account the environmental aspects," Helmi said in his presentation at IHS McCloskey Asia Pacific Coal Outlook Conference 2012 in Bali.

"Currently PLN is the biggest coal buyer in Indonesia, in 2013 we will need about 64 million tons of coal and more than 100 million tons per year after 2017," he said adding that PLN is currently has a total electrical generating capacity of 41 GW. Of the total 17.4 GW of CFPP which is 72 percent owned by PLN would require around 53 million tons of coal per year.

"Up to now, the growth of Indonesia electricity demand is still high which is about 9.4 percent per year, thus need a huge additional capacity of generation, transmission and distribution," he said.
