PLTP Sarulla II to start operation in 2017

State utility PT PLN has targeted that the geothermal power plant (PLTP) Sarulla II in North Tapanuli regency of North Sumatra province will start operation in 2017.

Currently, the local government is waiting for a proposal for development from its developer, PT Sarulla Operational Limited (SOL), a consortium of Medco, Ormat, Itochu and Kyushu. Its exploration process has yet to be implemented.

?Basically, the project is waiting for the result of development for PLTP Sarulla I. It is particularly concerned with the issuance of the joint decree of three ministers (SKB) on geothermal working area,? said Anang Yahmadi, senior manager of geothermal energy at PLN?s new and renewable energy division, in Jakarta on Tuesday.

According to him, the power price that had been agreed with PLN is 6.79 US cents per kilowatt hour (kWh).

The geothermal power plant (PLTP Sarulla II), with a generation capacity of 2 X 55 MW, is a further development of PLTP Sarulla I, which will be started to be developed in 2013. The contract of PLTP Sarulla I is being amended, particularly concerning its asset ownership, payment scheme, and extension of joint operation contract (JOC). It is targeted to start operation in 2014.
