PLTP Sorik Merapi to start operation in 2018

State utility PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) said that it had planned to start the commercial operation of the geothermal power plant (PLTP) Sorik Merapi in Mandailing regency of North Sumatra province in 2018.

The geothermal developer PT Sorik Merapi Geothermal Power is negotiating the energy sales contract (ESC) with the government.

?The developer has secured an assignment letter from the local government,? Anang Yahmadi, Senior Manager of Geothermal at PLN New and Renewable Energy Division, said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He also noted that the power price agreed by both the developer and the government was at 8.1 US cents per kilowatt hour (kWh).

The development of the power plant, which will have a generation capacity of 3 x 80 megawatt (MW), will need an investment of between US$2 and 3 million per MW, and is expected to fulfill the power need of Mandailing Natal region.
