The steam power plant (PLTU) Barru with a generation capacity of 2 x 50 megawatt (MW) in Barru regency of South Sulawesi province has been now ready to start its commercial operation.

After visiting the power plant last Saturday in Lampoko village of Balusu sub-district, State utility PT PLN President Director Nur Pamudji said that the PLTU is scheduled to start operation next month, together with the joint inaugurations of other power plants, which include PLTU Pacitan, by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Nur Pamudji, who was accompanied during his visit by Judi Winardi Widjaja, General Manager of PLN in Sulselrabar region, said that PLTU Barru is part of the first fast track of 10,000 MW power development.

Currently, the power supply that can be provided by the South Sulawesi power system has reached up to 1,108 MW, with the average base load at 833 MW, so that there is a power reserve of 275 MW or about 33 percent from the total existing capacity.

?With the operation of PLTU Barru, South Sulawesi has become more attractive for investors to do businesses in the province, including to build smelters,? said Nur Pamudji on the sidelines of his visit to PLTU Barru.

According to him, the power system in South Sulawesi has been now 100 percent generated with non-diesel-fuels (BBM) power plants, which consist of steam power plants (PLTU), combined cycled power plants (PLTGU), and hydro power plants. ?The BBM-based power plants will only function as stand-by facilities, which will only be used when there is any emergency,? he said.
