State utility PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) has targeted to start the commercial operation of one unit of the coal-fired power plant (PLTU) Bolok in Kupang with a generation capacity of 16.5 megawatt (MW) in July this year (2013).

The Bolok power project, which will have a total generation capacity of 2 x 16.5 MW, is part of the first stage of the 10,000 MW power development plan, said PLN Strategic Plan Director Bagiyo Riawan when he made a visit to Kupang last week.

Currently, the power system in the East Nusa Tenggara province (NTT) still relies on the diesel fuel power plants (PLTD), which are expensive to operate.

He said that when PLTU Bolok in operation, PLN will cut its operational cost significantly in the province, especially in Timor island, where Kupang is located.

According to him, with the operation of Bolok power plant, PLN will be able to make the power system in the province interconnected and integrated in one system so that it will become more reliable.

The development of PLTU Bolok, which is located in Bolok village of Kupang regency, will need a total investment of Rp 450 billion, which is derived from the budget of PLN (APLN).

The coal-fired power plant will require a total of 19 million tons of coal per year that will be supplied from Kalimantan.
