The PLTU Cirebon II coal-fired power plant project with capacity of 1,000 MW in West Java Province is facing fresh uncertainty after the provincial State Administrative Court issued a ruling suspending the environmental permit for the project, Kontan reported on Saturday.
The paper quoted Margaretha Quina, a researcher at Indonesian Center for Environmental Law, as saying that the court issued the ruling because the project does not conform with the Cirebon Regency 2011-2013 Spatial Zoning Plan (or RUTR).
She pointed out that according to the RUTR the project area should only be limited within the Astanajapura District, but turns out to also extend to Mundu District.
Heru Dewanto, President Director of PT Cirebon Energi Prasarana, the developer of the project, said that the company will go to the higher court as the Cirebon regency administration has made commitment to allow the project to span three districts.
Cirebon Energi, which is owned by a number of firms including IDX-listed PT Indika Energy Tbk, Marubeni Corporation, Samtan Co. Ltd, Korea Midland Power Co. Ltd, and Chubu Electric Power Co. Inc, plans to develop the project, an expansion of the existing 1x660 MW Cirebon coal-fired power plant. The project is targeted to be completed in 2020. This portal reported Wednesday quoting Heru as saying that financial close of the project was expected soon. (*)
