PLTU Paiton 9 to resume operation today

The PLTU Paiton 9 coal-fired power plant in Probolinggo, East Java, is expected to resume normal operation today (Monday), said M. Bardan, Corporate Secretary of PT Pembangkit Jawa Bali (PJB), a subsidiary of state-owned power firm PT PLN, the operator of the plant.
The power plant was turned off late last month after its water cooling system failed to work due to the arrival of massive number of jellyfish. Bardan said that 90 personnel were deployed to fix the cooling system for about two weeks.
?By Sunday, the intake (of the cooling system) had been cleaned off the jellyfish. The plan is to resume (the plant?s) operation on Monday,? Bardan told Petromindo.com.
The suspension of the PLTU Paiton 9 had contributed to the recent blackout in several parts of Jakarta.
Jellyfish has continued posing problem to PLTU Paiton 9 and in 2012 PLN erected a nest to keep the jellyfish from entering the power plant. This time, however, the jellyfish came in an unprecedented massive number, something which PLN has failed to anticipate. This happened probably due to the arrival of winter in Australia and the change in weather in East Java.
