The steam power plant (PLTU) Pangkalan Susu in Langkat regency of North Sumatra province needs 2,8 million tons of coal per year.

The coal will be supplied by PT Batara Batari Sinergy Nusantara and PT Hanson Energy.

?The amount of the coal needed is based on the generation capacity of the power plant at 4 x 220 megawatt (MW),? Helmi Najamuddin, Head of Coal Division at the state utility PT PLN, told Petromindo.com in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Helmi said that the steam power plant, which would be constructed by Guangdong Power Engineering Corporation, is expected to fulfill the power need in North Sumatra.

According to him, one unit of the PLTU, which consisted of 4 units with each having a generation capacity of 220 MW, would be in operation by March 2014. Then one more unit will start operation in May 2014.

?Units 3 and 4 are now in a process of tender. Both are scheduled to be in operation in 2016,? said Helmi.
