State owned electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) has resumed the operation of the Unit 2 of PLTU Pangkalan Susu coal fired power plant in North Sumatra, according to Detik.com.

The firm suspended the operation of the power unit in February of this year because three of the powerline towers that distribute power from the 2x200 MW PLTU Pangkalan Susu collapsed. The incident happened because many of their member towers (main bracings) were sawed off and stolen.

The incident exacerbated the power shortage in North Sumatra. With the Unit 2 of the power plant resuming operation, the power shortage in the province has been somewhat relieved. At present, North Sumatra has a total installed capacity of 1,431 MW, smaller than the peak load of 1,868 MW, according to PLN?s North Sumatra Area Manager Mosses Allo.

The Unit 1 of the power plant is still in commissioning stage. (*)
