Police arrest eight Mimika residents over Freeport terror

Papua police and the counterterrorism squad arrested eight residents of Kwamki subdistrict, Mimika on Monday for their alleged involvement in recent attacks on copper and gold mining giant firm PT Freeport Indonesia.

Spokesman for the Papua Police, Adj. Sr. Comr. Nurhabri was quoted by Antara news agency as saying the people were undergoing an intensive questioning related to the attacks, which killed three people and injured five others. Police had said the attackers were trained people.

Meanwhile, Army officers arrived at Moses Kilangin Airport in Mimika on Monday afternoon on a mission to safeguard Freeport following the attacks.

Employees have been prevented from working in Tembagapura and tight security has been enacted along the road to the mine. (*)
