The East Kalimantan police has summoned the head of state oil and gas company Pertamina's operation in East Kalimantan for questioning over fuel smuggling.

Local daily Samarinda Pos reported that the police had earlier asked Edysyah to appear at the police station last Friday for questioning, but he failed to appear, citing in a letter to the police that he was busy that day.

Police sources said the police would send another letter to summon Edysyah for questioning and would probably take him to the police station forcibly if he kept refusing to appear.

The police is seeking to question Edysyah as part of the investigation into fuel smuggling attempt which recently occurred in the Muara Pantuan area.

On Dec. 31, 2000, the navy captured a tug boat in the area, carrying 1,500 diesel oil. The navy believed the boat attempted to smuggle the fuel out of the province because the boat's crew and captain could not provide necessary documents showing the fuel had been legally bought from Pertamina. (*)
