The police will be officially involved in maintaining security and in protecting oil and production facilities in Riau’s offshore and onshore oil fields under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by the Riau police and oil and gas producers in the province on Wednesday.
Under the MOU agreement, the police would be directly responsible to manage the security system in the province’s oil and gas oil fields in cooperation with the existing oil and gas producers, Kompas reported on Thursday.
“Oil and gas production facilities are part of important assets that require a maximal protection,” said the chief of the Riau police, Deddy Sutardi Komaruddin, told Kompas daily following the signing of the agreement.
State revenues from oil production in Riau contribute about 12.5 percent of the state budget. (*)
