POSCO produces 1st coke from Indonesia plant

Korean steel producer POSCO reported on Friday its Indonesian unit PT Krakatau POSCO has successfully produced the first coke in Indonesia on October 8th, 2013.
?One day before the first coke was produced; Krakatau POSCO charged the first coal into the coke oven as the blower, the core facility of the coke making process, was operated. Approximately 36 hours after coal was charged into the 58.9 ton coke oven, and at a temperature of 1150`C, carbonized coal was made into coke for the first time in Indonesia,? the company said in a statement.
The company said that construction of its steel JV with Indonesia?s state owned steel maker PT Krakatau Steel will be completed by the end of December.
?Construction of the 3 million ton per annum integrated steelwork in Cilegon, Banten province started in 2010 with construction progress currently at 98 percent,? the company said in a media statement. Products of the company will consist of slab, plate, and hot rolled coil (HRC).
According to earlier reports, the plant will process 5,400 tonnes of coking coal per day to produce 1.3 MTPA of coke, which will be used for steel production process.
POSCO has 70 percent interest in Krakatau POSCO with Kratakau Steel holding the balance.
