Power crisis is hitting South Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan provinces as floods that are inundating Tanah Laut and Tanah Bumbu regencies have forced coal producers in the areas to halt supply to the 2x65 MW Asam-Asam power plant in South Kalimantan, Media Indonesia reported on Tuesday.
Asam-Asam's plan manager Dwi Priyo Basuki said the plant gets coal supplies from five companies, that is PT Jorong Barutama Greston, PT Arutmin Indonesia, PT Dinar Kalimantan Coal, PT Alfairung Jaya and PT Surya Sakti Darma Kencan (SSDK). Each of Jorong and Arutmin usually supply 1000 tons of coal to the power plant, while each of the three others supply 500 tons per day. The plant consumes about 2000 tons of coal per day.
“Coal stock in the power plant is extremely critical at 2,300 tons and only sufficient for one day,” said Dwi in Pelaihari on Monday.
According to the newspaper, floods have yet to subside in Tanah Laut's Jorong dan Kintap areas where floodwater reach 80 centimeters high. The situation has turned worse because state owned electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara has shut down one unit of the Asam-Asam power plant for maintenance. (*)
