Power plant projects draw protests

Hundreds of Poso resident rallied on Tuesday at the Sulewana hydropower plant project in Tentena, Central Sulawesi, demanding the suspension of the project until after the project?s owner pay compensations for their lands, Kompas reported on Wednesday.
The 650-Megawatt power plant is being developed by PT Bukaka Teknik Utama.
Martin Ombo, coordinator of the Front for the Advocacy of Hydpower Plant and High Voltage Cables (FAPS) which organized the protest, claimed that one year into the development of the project, the company had yet to fully paid compensations for the lands acquired for the project.
The development of the project started on April 18, 2005.
Meanwhile, in Bali, a group of people came to the province?s legislative council to voice protest against the plan to build a geothermal power project in Bedugul They questioned why the province?s governor ?recommended? the project, which they claim will cause damage to the local environment. (*)
