A coal-fired power plant will be built at the mining site of the coal mining giant PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) in Sangatta, East Kutai regency, East Kalimantan province, the local Kaltim Post daily said.

The paper said that an MoU on the power project would be signed ?soon? by the East Kutai regency administration, state-owned power firms PT Indonesia Power and PT PLN, and KPC, which would provide coal with quality of below 6,000 calorie.

The power plant, whose capacity can be upgraded until 165 megawatt, will provide power to several areas in East Kutai particularly Sangatta and Bontang. It would help avoid brown outs amid power shortage and support local economic development.

The paper quoted KPC president Noke Kiroyan as saying that the company would fully support the power project.

?We support the wish of the East Kutai government to develop a power plant? The coal raw material will come from us,? Noke said.(*)
