During the first semester of this year, oil-based fuel used by state electricity company PLN rose to 5.64 million kiloliters (kl) from 4.74 million kl in the same semester, last year despite the company?s program to increase the use of coal.

Director of Primary Energy at PLN Nur Pamudji said in Jakarta Friday that the electricity generated by PLN during the first semester of this year rose by 6.3 percent to 88.2 trillion watt hour (twh) over the corresponding period, last year.

The volume of coal consumed by the company?s power reached 19 million tons, an increase of 12 percent over the first half, last year. The volume of gas being used by PLN and independent power producers (IPPs) dropped by 7 percent to 163 tera British thermal unit (tbtu) from 176 tbtu in the same period last year.

The production of geothermal power plants reached 4.7 twh in the January-June period, unchanged from that in the same semester, last year, while the electricity supply from hydropower plants fell to 8.6 twh because the volume of rainfalls was relatively lower compared to the same period, last year.

Pamudji said that the increase in the use of coal was still lower than expected because new large coal-fired power plants which were built under the first stage-10,000 megawat-power plant development program such as PLTU Indramayu, PLTU Rembang, PLTU Lontar, PLTU Suralaya-8 and PLTU Tanjungjati-3 began their commercial operation in the middle of the first semester.

The use of coal will therefore higher in the second semester because these power plants have operated at full capacity, he said. ?In the second semester, there will be an additional gas supply of 65 bbtud from Jambi Merang to PLTGU Muaratawar," he said.

The use of coal is expected to reach 45 million tons at the end of this year, while gas and oil is expected to reach 344 tbtu and 9 million kiloliters. The total electricity production is expected to reach 180 twh. (godang)
