Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Jero Wacik said that Indonesia saw a growth of power demand at 8.4 percent this year, while its electrification rate reached 75.83 percent as compared to 75.3 percent last year.
He noted that the government had also managed to implement the power development program for villages as of 2012 96.70 percent of the total villages across the country have got the electricity infrastructure while for the year 2011 it was only 96.02 percent.
Next year, the proportion of villages having the power infrastructure is estimated to reach 97.80 percent.
During 2012, total realization of installed capacity amounted to 43,879 megawatt (MW), which is a bit lower than the target of 44,224 MW. But it is still higher than 40.000 MW reached in 2011.
The power capacity increase of 3,879.2 MW was derived from steam power plant (PLTU) Lontar Unit 2&3, PLTU Paiton, PLTU Kendari, PLTU Amurang, PLTP Ulubelu Unit 1, PLTU Cirebon, PLTU Tanjung Jati B Unit 4, PLTU Paiton Unit 3, PLTU Jeneponto, solar power plant PLTM Bonehau and solar power plant PLTM Panaran.
On the sector of new and renewable energy, the government said it was committed to creating more conducive condition for the development of such energy. It had issued a policy of feed-in tariff for geothermal power plants at prices ranging from 10 to 18.5 US cents/kWh in August 2012.
Currently, the government is drafting the feed-in tariff for mini and micro hydro power plants, and waste-based power plants.
During 2012, a number new projects of new and renewable energy had been implemented. Among the projects include PLTS 100 MW which involved Samsung and Sharp, PLTU Biomass (2 x 15 MW) in Medan, PLT Biogas POME (3,9 MW) in Kebon Tandun PTPN V and Siak, Riau, PLTS in Bali and West Nusa Tenggara.
According to him, the production of bio-diesel reached 2 million kiloliter in 2012, an increase of 37 percent from that of 2011. The percentage of bio-fuel mix into oil fuels had also increased from 5 percent in 2011 to 7.5 percent in 2012.
